What are vowel marks?

A vowel mark is a small sign above or below a letter. It shows the short sound that follows that letter. Missing it leads you to read the word another way.

At the start, a text with vowel marks is safer to read. A text without them needs experience, because the reader supplies the sound. Vowel-marked short words first, then unmarked text, reduces the mix-up.

  1. See the letter and the mark above it as two things.
  2. Read the same letter with a different vowel mark.
  3. Start with a short word that has marks.
  4. Check the marked reading before you move to unmarked text.
